TRANSCRIPT:
(00:02) How does content actually get you speaking engagements and what does speaking engagements do for you in terms of your content strategy hey everyone I'm Kim Rittberg I am a six-time award-winning marketer former executive in media at places like Netflix and People magazine and I am here to help you grow your business and grow your impact and visibility through video okay now I can put down this mock microphone it's not even on but I did want to talk about content and speaking and how they work together so I've been thinking
(00:30) about this a lot because I did just do my TEDx talk and I have a lot of people my clients come to me people ask me "How do I get more speaking engagements?" And I love this question because it really is one of those uh catch - 22 it's hard to get speaking engagements if you haven't done speaking engagements and that is why content is perfect if you do want to speak more you have to use content to show people that you speak and if you don't speak. I will give you some ideas on how to get footage that you can then
(01:00) leverage for speaking engagements so just to take a step back in terms of getting speaking engagements we're really talking about authority so what we want to do is establish and leverage our authority and what is the best place to do that social media um generally speaking when you're showing up you want to be showing people that you are credible and that you are already in a position where you are teaching or educating or speaking and we don't have to already be on that huge stage that is normal that in the first year two, three,
(01:34) five years maybe that you're working and trying to build this up you don't have footage of you on a huge stage that's fine and totally standard not a big deal what you can do though is start showing people what would it look like if you were on a stage how do you speak what is your message and I want to take a step back the thing that speaking engagements and content have in common is there always is a main message about what you talk about whether you're a leadership coach or a founder it doesn't matter your area but generally speaking when
(02:07) you speak there's maybe one or two things you always talk about so for me that is video and public speaking right that's my main thing now that I've been doing it for a few years I also do motivational work around mindset because that really is so connected to public speaking a lot of it is mindset it's not just about how we speak and confidence but it's really the mindset to even be on that stage and to be taking those bigger steps and moves in your business so stepping back to content and speaking how they connect so number one
(02:40) once you have a speaking engagement you can get content from that so if you have a speaking engagement absolutely make sure to get a videographer and or a photographer to film you at that event it costs money yes that is true you absolutely must get footage of yourself speaking it is very hard to show someone that you are a speaker if you can't show you know the old phrase show don't tell you have to show people that you are a speaker so we have the visuals to show people you were a speaker and so these speaking engagements when you actually
(03:14) get the footage make a lot of content from that you can make short footage you can make short videos you can make photos you can put together a reel once you have enough footage you should definitely be putting together a reel and that reel can be updated as you do more footage as you get more speaking engagements you can update your reel with fresh footage so first we're talking about um getting speaking engagements making a moment i like to call it making a moment when you are somewhere whether it is a huge stage
(03:43) with hundreds or thousands of people or teaching five to 10 people get footage of it so it is very important for people to see you visually in that position of authority and expertise so uh if you are not getting footage your lesson today is get that footage um and then another thing to think about is when you start thinking about what am I going to teach or what would I talk about these are the same questions you're asking yourself when you create content so when I work with my clients they say to me you know I don't know
(04:15) what to talk about well I start with what would you enjoy speaking about for 20 to 30 minutes what do your clients ask you about a lot sometimes people have like a personal experience in their life that they want to share and they want that to be their experience great they want that to be their keynote that's totally fine but you really want to have things connect right there should be some connective tissue between what you're doing online if you're running a business one of your talks or both of your talks should be related to
(04:43) that that way people understand you know Kim is a video producer you know former media executive video producer and public speaking training coach she also helps people break through fear and barriers and build up their mindset really hit those goals that's not such a leap right so I don't want to be talking about I always say this I'm not going to make content about cats not only do I not have cats but it doesn't necessarily make sense with my larger content strategy and what I want people to think about me for so uh again when we're
(05:17) talking about content and speaking engagements we're talking about establishing authority and leveraging authority and as you start to speak more you have to be proactive about creating content posting that content right being explicit about what you teach who you can help how you can bring value to them and a lot of this is not just social media it's really that larger thought leadership strategy so I actually had an interesting conversation with a client recently and they were you know not sure if they want to really pursue
(05:48) keynote speaking or client work but the beauty of being seen as a thought leader is you then get to be in the driver's seat of what you want to do next you get to decide how you want to work with people because people will start finding you right you will start getting inbound reachouts when people realize you have so much knowledge and so much information to share they can't wait to hear from you so don't worry about does it look like one-on-one coaching is it group coaching is it only keynotes once you're being seen as the expert the
(06:18) expert in leadership um the expert in business the expert in finance then people will reach out to you and you then get to decide your offerings but that thought leadership is a rising what is it the rising tide that lifts all boats once you're seen as a thought leader everything will start to come into place and you can decide how you want to work with those inbound leads are they clients are they workshops are they speaking engagements so I feel like I left you with a lot so really when we're thinking about
(06:50) speaking engagements speaking engagements and content feed each other content can help you get speaking engagements and speaking engagements turn into content which help you get more speaking engagements so it is a beautiful little circle um I am Kim Rittberg I spent the first 15 years of my career in media i absolutely love helping business owners founders and self-employed professionals become thought leaders through video and podcast if you're interested in learning more make sure to subscribe drop a comment on if you're pursuing speaking
