Behind the Scenes: How to Prep for Your Next TV or Podcast Appearance
Proud coach alert! 🎉
My client & friend Daniel brought his wine knowledge to Fox5 and did amazing. You can watch his segment here: https://youtube.com/shorts/jUaj8nOkj2k
Watching Daniel shine on camera reminded me why I love this work — and it's a perfect example of a truth I share with all my clients: success on camera is not luck, it's prep.
Here's some behind-the-scenes tips to help you prep for your next TV or podcast appearance.
Success Is Not Luck, It's Prep
Every polished TV hit or podcast interview you've ever watched had hours of preparation behind it. The confidence, the clarity, the perfect turn of phrase — none of that happens by accident. It happens because the person did the work beforehand.
Understand Your Audience
If it's a general audience, this isn't the time to geek out — save that for industry events. From my decades in TV as a journalist, I always tell clients: prepare "news you can use" when speaking to a broad audience. Your goal isn't to prove how much you know. It's to give people something useful, memorable, and easy to understand.
Create Memorable Soundbites
This is probably one of the most fun parts of my coaching — coming up with catchy phrases people can remember later.
Here's an exercise I use with clients: envision someone at dinner that night, telling a friend what they learned. What's the short phrase they'd easily remember from what you said? That's what you're aiming for — a snappy, short soundbite that sticks.
Bring Passion & Positivity
If you love your topic, the audience will too. If you're bored of it, guess who else will be bored? Yup — the audience. Passion is contagious, and it's often the difference between a forgettable interview and one people talk about for weeks.
